Can You Get Dental Implants with Gum Disease? Find Out Now!
Dental implants are one of the best ways to restore missing teeth, but patients often ask: Can you get dental implants with gum disease? The short answer is not right away. Gum disease weakens the foundation that supports your teeth and implants, so it must be treated before implant placement.
At North Park Smiles in San Diego, we help patients restore their smiles safely by first addressing gum health and then planning long-term tooth replacement. Here's what you need to know before
getting dental implants.
Understanding Gum Disease and Implants

Gum disease is a bacterial infection that damages the gums and bone that support teeth. If it's not treated, it can lead to tooth loss. Because implants depend on healthy bone and gum tissue for stability, placing them in an infected area increases the risk of failure.
In other words, gum health directly affects dental implant eligibility. Our dental team will first evaluate the condition of your gums and jawbone using digital X-rays to determine the best treatment plan.
Treating Gum Disease Before Implants

The good news is that gum disease can often be treated effectively. Depending on how advanced the infection is, treatment may include deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), antibiotics, or gum surgery.
Once the gums have healed and the infection is under control, your mouth can be reevaluated for implants. This step is essential because untreated gum disease can continue to destroy bone tissue, making it impossible for implants to fuse properly.
Addressing the problem early helps ensure long-lasting success and better overall oral health.
When Implants May Still Be an Option

Some patients who previously had gum disease may still qualify for implants if their condition has been successfully treated. Even if bone loss has occurred, procedures like bone grafting can help rebuild the area so it's strong enough to support an implant.
At North Park Smiles, we use advanced technology to assess bone density and healing potential before recommending treatment. We also provide maintenance care to prevent gum disease from returning after implant placement.
Managing gum disease and implants together requires experience and close monitoring, which is exactly what our team provides.
